Red Winged Blackbird

After weeks of taking pictures I found that I was merely downloading and not cataloging or processing. So I am now looking at hundreds of shots, many hitting the recycle bin, and prepping others for portraits and publication.

During this process I found some "reach-out-and-touch" shots of a Red Winged Blackbird. This made me think of the Project Black challenge going on over at Anna Carson Photography, which looks like a lot of fun. So, here I come, folks, with my contribution to Project Black!

What a great black shot. How nice of him to pose for you.

Wonderful shot. Another one to add for my wish list of birds I'd like to have visit my back yard.

Wow, great photo. Tell me, HOW did you get him to sit still for you? A bird sees my camera--and immediately flies off.

Welcome to project Black. This is a great shot. I love how the feathers glisten.

Fantastic shot! Such rich black tones in the feathers and the flash of red makes a great contrast!

I love that!

And I like the term "reach-out-and-touch." :)

Beautiful!! I never saw a Red Winged Blackbird till last year. I want to take a picture of one, too. I spend a lot of time walking in the prairie, so my chances are good, I think. To me their color spot changes to bright orange when they fly past.

I am originally from Arizona--Douglas--and lived in Phoenix for awhile when it was only the 12th largest city in the US. You and I are also "neighbors," sorta. I have a life-long Douglas friend who lives in Branson.

Excellent shot! It's as if he came and perched there, just for you.

I know what you mean about downloading and not cataloging or processing. I've been playing catch-up in that arena as well.

Great entry for PB. Have a super weekend. :D

expert photography, Barb.

Red wing nests lined a path I used to run on and one or two protective parents would usually swoop toward my head as I passed. Too close for comfort.

your shot is a much better look at the lovely bird.

Excellent shot! Very dramatic contrast between the sharp focus on the black subject and the background. And as somebody pointed out already, it was nice of him to sit still for you. I don't usually get so much cooperation from birds. (But the short depth of field, suggests that perhaps Mr Blackbird didn't know you were there... as in long lens, na?)

As some have guessed, and I have confessed, this was taken with a long lens --- 400mm.
