When my son was deployed to Iraq in 2006 we "adopted" his cat Smokey for the year he was gone. We were living in Arizona at the time. Then a year ago we took her into our new home in Missouri while her "dad" relocated and had sea duties. She will be with us for the next year.
Smokey has traveled by plane twice, cross country by car once, and many other short trips. She is the only cat I've ever had that is so laid back and adaptive that she actually used her potty box in a small tent at the side of the road!
We love her a lot and know we will give her back to Scott, reluctantly. But we also know he misses her a lot and it seems that no matter how long it has been since she has seen him, she knows who her "dad" is. When he sent us a throw for Christmas she climbed into the box before I had it unpacked and has adopted the throw as her own, rolling on it to make sure her scent is firmly embedded!
It took a long time but she and the three little Shih Tzus are co-existing quite nicely. I think when she goes back to Scott he will need to get her a playmate. She is often sitting in her most regal pose and tolerates the camera well. So today she is my Macro Monday model.

Black cats....are my favorite color! Beautiful eyes.
she is beautiful...and i'd say unique as well. i've never known a cat that adaptable! :)
Smokey would be hard to let go. Beautiful black fur - I am in love!
She's a beauty!
good to know that cat has a good home during its "dads" absence.
So glad everyone's getting along so well...cats aren't always so adaptable! Blackie's a beautiful cat...
Gorgeous eyes, you did a great job!
What a beautiful cat.
Beautiful captures for today.
i love a grey cat! i have a photo of the same butterfly in your banner. i found him at a butterfly exhibit that came through town this fall. so beautiful!
What a gorgeous cat! I have a cat myself, but whenever she sees my camera she runs away scared, or she hides herself somewhere I can't photograph her!! That is such a pity!
I love her yellow eyes. Regretfully I am allergic, so I'll have to admire thru blog-land.
Ahh! In looks she reminds me of our Rolly who crossed the rainbow bridge in November. But in temperament, not at all like him. He was a hisser and horrible traveler. I enjoyed your story.
Lovin' Macro Mondays,
Cameo @-->-->---
What a wonderful cat ! My very first cat was black too and she travelled with me everywhere, she even went shopping with me (waiting in the car) and I never went out to friends without her. She was like a little dog.
Do you think Smokey and Spotty Chop. I have never see prettier eyes
She is so beautiful Barbs and as you said such a regal pose ! Much thinner than my black cat Pippa ! I love how you have been able to pick up her coat with your camera. I am desperate to get a nice camera as I love photography and would love to learn how to take photos properly - one day maybe !
Hugs
Julie
