Thematic Photographic 4 --- Wood

The theme this week is "Wood" and many beautiful examples have already been sent to Carmi at Written Inc. It wasn't hard for me to come up with some examples for this theme. I love wood of all kinds and love to take pictures of trees, old buildings, and beaches. "Beaches? What do beaches have to do with wood?" you ask? You'll see below.

I just couldn't limit myself to only one photo, so here are a few:

My favorite Starbucks is in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. It is in a very, very old building --- we are talking George Washington days --- about a block from the Potomac River. Of course GW didn't frequent the Starbucks, but whenever I go into this shop I look at the same ceiling beams that he could very well have. This is an example of all the old wood that can be found in Old Town.

Also in Virginia is Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello, in Charlottesville. The inside of the house contains so many original artifacts made of wood. We weren't allowed to take pictures of the interior, but the exterior has also been preserved much as when TJ lived there. This photo is of one of the remaining original trees on the plantation. This old guy is very old!

Now to the other coast. My son and I love to go to San Diego and we did just that in February 2007. I mention that to explain why the beach in this photo looks so cold --- it was! Perched on the shore overlooking the never-ending awesomeness of the ocean, is the beautiful Crystal Pier. Incredibly, this huge pier and all those cottages are held up by wood, lots and lots of wood. Just imagine how many times per day those waves crash against those pillars.

The incomparable beauty of wood is all around us providing warmth, strength and a connection to ages long past. Give a tree a nice pat on the trunk, just to say thanks!

Wherever you are, I hope you are having a blessed day.

Okay, first of all I love that tree. Great choice! Kind of gives a new meaning to the term "tree hugging". And I love shot of the pier too. You can really "feel" the cold. And cold on the ocean is a whole different kind of cold. Capturing it can be tricky. So nice work there!

Hi Barb, I have been to both the Starbucks and Monticello so it was a surprise to see them on your blog. Talk about Deja Vu.

Love your old wooden beams - they've been there a long time - bet they could tell a story or two. Your photo of the tree is beautiful and I really like your last photo too. Really enjoyed reading your thoughts on all these too.

Oooh, I really like the character in that tree. Or is that trees? It almost looks like three trees in one. Excellent choice. And speaking of character, I love the old wood beams of that restaurant.

Barb, I totally agree with the comment you left, I think it's what attracted me to the sculptor. I loved your Starbucks photos, I work in Boston and my office building is actually converted warehouses from long ago. We have photos showing what the buildings looked like back in the day, and we have lots of interior wood to look at. Thanks for stopping by!

This is a fabulous post! I love wood... my husband and I just finished a family room and aside from painting two walls the brightest red in the universe, we couldn't decide on what type of wood to have in the room ... so we went with ecclectic. We have maple, pine, oak, cedar, you name it ... we're going for a little of everything in here and though it's mix matched? We love the theme --- wood.
